Chapter History

As part of our chapter's 40th Year Anniversary in 2004, the Board of Directors decided it was time to build a history of the Dallas Chapter for our website. Our chapter is very fortunate to have Helen Harden, CRM, one of our original founding members, still serving as an active member of our chapter. Helen agreed to share her memories of our chapter over these many years. Our chapter published her recollections as a regular series in the newsletters published during the 2004-2005 year. Her articles have also been compiled into a section of our website entitled "Chapter History" which will provide those who follow us with first-hand accounts of important events and personalities from our history. The history is given to us first hand by Helen Harden, our chapter's charter member in 1964 who is still an active member in 2006!

Vendor Members

Article Written by Helen Harden on 11/11/2004

Early in the ARMA (American Records Management Association) history the then thirteen chapters had much discussion and some heated arguments about admitting vendors to membership in an ARMA Chapter. Some chapter’s feared vendors would make the membership list a “contact list”. Others were concer

Gallant Gentlemen

No one could ever describe the Dallas Chapter members as only hard workers, straight faced, or a no-fun group. Quite to the contrary. There was always someone doing something or telling something that entertained the others. The atmosphere of the occasion for meeting was similar to the excitement of a family reunion.

This reminiscence illustrates that fun and laughter was ever present.

Overview of ARMA Dallas Chapter History

(Tom Forsyth, our chapter, VP of Public Relations, sat down with Helen in 2004 and recorded Helen’s recollections of our chapter founding. This article served as the first in the series:)

The Dallas Chapter of ARMA International was founded in 1964. There were five members-at-large who worked to secure a charter for the chapter which required 12 members. Back then, the national organization was the American Records Management Association. Today, it is the Association for Records Managers and Administrators and is an international organization for the promotion of the records management profession. ARMA was started in 1956 in Chicago Illinois. One of the early ARMA pioneers was a lady who worked for a file cabinet company.
